The Kilimanjaro Hotel, Dar es Salaam, opened its doors in 1965 as the country's leading hotel. This imposing building was not only an icon in Tanzania but regarded as 'the' hotel in East Africa. It played host to many famous people from pop star Michael Jackson to world leaders such as Nelson Mandela.
The original Kilimanjaro Hotel served the country well for over 20 years, but lost its preeminence as the country’s leading hotel when Tanzania’s fortunes faltered in the late 1980s.
Today, after a USD 40 million refurbishment and rebuilding programme that has taken inexcess of two years, this elegant hotel is both a testament to Dar es Salaam's historical past and it's independent future and a favoured meeting place of discerning locals as well as visitors in town. History
The Kempinski Hotels and Resorts founded in Germany over one hundred years ago. It has long reflected the finest traditions of European hospitality. The Kilimanjaro Hotel known as the Kilimanjaro Kempinski Hotel and fondly known as "The Kili" was officially opened on 9th December, 1965 by the First President of Tanzania, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere. No comprehensive refurbishment or rehabilitation work had been undertaken since the hotel was opened in 1965. Because of the need of upgrading the hotel, the Government decided to attract investors willing to undertake the hotel's refurbishment and expansion programme without necessarily ceding its controlling interest in the company. On 20th February, 2003 a bidder was chosen and an Asset Sale Agreement was signed between the Presidential Parastatal Sector Reform Commission (PSRC) and ASB Holdings Limited a subsidiary of Albwardy Investment Limited.
Rebuilding the first truly 5-star hotel (international standard) in Tanzania was completed in mid 2005. The hotel is now the perfect combination of luxurious accommodation, modern conference facilities, and old word charm. This elegant hotel is both a testament to Dar es Salaam's historical past and its independent future.
